There’s a short window every fall where the light turns gold, the air gets that first real chill, and the leaves are just about to let go of the trees – and that’s exactly when we caught this fall family photo session in Sudbury. A few more days and the field would have been bare, but we made it just in time.
We started in the tall grass, letting the family wander and play while the low autumn sun lit up everything around them. Dad carried the kids piggyback through the field, mom scooped them up for cuddles, and in between the posed moments there were plenty of real ones – a little one covering her ears from the wind, a big brother wrapping his sister in a hug, giggles that didn’t need any direction from me at all.
Partway through the session we pulled out a soft blanket and turned it into a swing, and that’s when things got really fun. The kids climbed in together, laughing and tumbling as mom and dad swung them back and forth, and it turned into one of my favourite parts of the whole shoot. There’s something about that kind of unscripted play that always makes for the best family sessions – no forced smiles, just genuine joy.
As the sun dipped lower, we moved through the field for a few walking shots, the family holding hands in a row with the golden trees behind them, before wrapping up with some quieter, closer moments – foreheads pressed together, a mama holding her boy close, a family simply enjoying one last bit of fall before winter set in.
These are the sessions that remind me why I love photographing families in this in-between season. The light is unbeatable, the mood is cozy, and there’s still just enough green and gold left in the leaves to make it feel like a proper Northern Ontario autumn.
If you’re local and hoping to capture your own fall family photos before the season changes, I’d love to help you make it happen!
